Christmas tree size starts with the ceiling. Balsam Hill measures a tree from the stand to the topmost tip and recommends leaving at least 12 inches above it; King of Christmas suggests a tree one to two feet shorter than the ceiling. Width comes next: a full tree is about 55 to 65 percent as wide as it is tall, while a 7-foot pencil tree is only about 19 to 23 inches across.
The Christmas tree size guide turns your ceiling height into a tree height and your floor space into a shape. For high ceilings, read the tall Christmas tree guide, which compares real 10 and 12 foot trees by width and tip count. For tight spaces, the slim, pencil and flatback tree guide compares widths and shows when a half tree against the wall is the better answer. The small and tabletop tree guide covers trees of 18 inches to 4 feet for tables, desks and dorm rooms.

At least 12 inches, Balsam Hill recommends, and King of Christmas allows 6 to 12 inches. Treetopia reminds you to leave enough space for a tree topper, so plan on the larger gap with a tall one.
A full tree is typically 55 to 65 percent as wide as it is tall, King of Christmas says. A 7-foot pencil tree is far narrower, about 19 to 23 inches, by Treetopia's figures.
Tabletop trees. Balsam Hill says trees of 18 inches to 2 feet are ideal for tables.
