How to Decorate a Small Christmas Tree (2 to 4 Feet)

How to decorate a small Christmas tree of 2 to 4 feet: how many ornaments to use, keeping them light on short branches, and when battery lights make sense.

Decorate a small Christmas tree of 2 to 4 feet by scaling everything down: small, light ornaments, a narrow ribbon and lights sized to the tree. Mahoney’s says a 4.5-foot tree feels complete with about 40 to 45 ornaments. Battery lights suit a table with no nearby outlet.

How many ornaments a small Christmas tree needs

A small Christmas tree of 2 to 4 feet can take anywhere from about 12 to 80 ornaments, depending on which per-foot rule you follow.

Tree height 6.2 per foot (University of Sheffield students, via Old World Christmas) 10 to 15 per foot (Old World Christmas) 20 per foot (Hicks Nurseries)
2 ft About 12 20 to 30 40
3 ft About 19 30 to 45 60
4 ft About 25 40 to 60 80

Figures are calculated from each rule’s per-foot number.

Mahoney’s gives a nearby figure: a 4.5-foot tree feels complete with about 40 to 45 ornaments, or about 9 to 10 per foot. So start between the 6.2 per foot and the 10 per foot figures, hang those, then add a few at a time until the tree looks full. Larger ornaments fill more space, so you need fewer.

Our decorating guide covers the full order of work, which stays the same at this size.

Choosing light ornaments for short branches

A small Christmas tree’s short branches have little room, so keep its ornaments light. Old World Christmas has a rule for any tree that starts low: the heaviest pieces belong on the lower, stronger branches, and anything that makes a branch droop should be moved.

Look for:

  • Ornaments sold as small or mini sets, sized for the branches rather than for a 7-foot tree.
  • A hanging loop or hook that sits close to the ornament, so it does not dangle past the branch below.
  • One or two colors rather than many. A small tree has less room for a mix, so a scheme such as red and gold can look tidier.

A tabletop tree also puts every ornament at a child’s reach. The Consumer Product Safety Commission says to avoid sharp or breakable decorations around small children, to keep trimmings with small removable parts out of their reach, and to avoid trimmings that look like candy or food.

Battery lights on a small Christmas tree

A small Christmas tree on battery lights has no cord to run to an outlet. That leaves more choice of spot, and The Last Straw names shelves and windowsills among the places battery sets can go.

The tradeoffs are brightness and running time. Battery sets are usually not as bright as plug-in sets, The Last Straw says. Many sets have a timer, so check the box for the set you buy, including how long the batteries last.

Keep the battery pack out of sight but easy to reach, such as behind the trunk.

Battery or plug-in, a small tree’s lights need the usual checks. The U.S. Fire Administration says to inspect lights each year and throw away strands with frayed or pinched wires, and to keep the tree at least 3 feet from heat sources, including candles and heat vents.

Ribbon and toppers in a smaller scale

Ribbon and toppers on a small tree should be scaled down with everything else. Choose a narrow ribbon, and cut it shorter than the 2 to 3 foot pieces Hicks Nurseries uses in its 6- to 9-foot examples. Home Depot says mesh or textured ribbons usually hold on better than smooth ones, which helps on short branches.

Keep the topper small and light enough that the top stays upright. Slim trees face the same issue, and our slim tree guide covers ribbon that runs from top to bottom. To choose the tree itself, see the small and tabletop tree guide.

Frequently asked questions

How many ornaments does a small Christmas tree need?

Published per-foot figures work out to about 19 to 60 ornaments on a 3-foot tree. Mahoney's says a 4.5-foot tree feels complete with about 40 to 45, so start near the low end and add from there.

How do you decorate a small Christmas tree with ribbon?

Use a narrow ribbon and cut it into short pieces. Hicks Nurseries, whose examples run from 6 to 9 feet, suggests pieces of 2 to 3 feet tucked in as waves or loops. Go shorter on a tree under 4 feet.

How do you decorate a small tabletop Christmas tree?

Keep everything light, and place the tree on a steady surface. Use small ornaments, a thin ribbon and lights sized to the tree. Battery lights suit a table with no nearby outlet.

Are battery lights good for a small Christmas tree?

They can be, since nothing ties the tree to an outlet. A small tree also takes fewer lights, so any loss of brightness matters less. Check the box for battery life.
